Lewis-Clark State College Sporting Clays Course

        

Description and Purpose: This course is designed to introduce students to the techniques, rules, etiquette, and safety principles of clay target shooting.

Instructor: John Widener. Mr. Widener has been an avid shooter and instructor for the past 35 years. His achievements include: member of the U.S. Air Force shooting team, US Air Force skeet champion, US all-military skeet champion, and state titles in Idaho, Washington, and Indiana.

Days and times: Monday 6-8 PM

Grading: P/F only

Course fees: None. NOTE: students must provide their own ammunition and pay range fees at the Lewiston Gun Club. The student fee rate is $4/round with a total of 7 rounds. Ammunition typically costs $4 to $5 per box and you will need one box per round. Total student cost for all ammo and targets should be around $60.

Liability: All students must read and sign the attached acknowledgement of safety rules, potential hazards, and release of liability form.

        

Course Meeting Schedule and Activities.

DATE: TOPIC/ACTIVITY:
Feb. 25 Intro to clay target shooting, syllabus, grading. (clubhouse, history of LGC, walk around facility, show how to load traps, instructors credentials).
March 3 Gun operation and safety. (all students can safely and correctly operate a: single shot, double barrel, pump, and auto loading shotgun. Check chamber & show clear, muzzle control, open chamber at all times, loaded weapons, etc.)
March 10 Rules, scoring, and etiquette. (ATA rules, hit, miss, squads, rotations, station 5 rotation) These items, as well as gun safety, should be assessed before beginning shooting next class meeting.
